What is Salicylic Acid?

Salicylic Acid is a naturally occurring organic acid known as a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). While it can be found in the bark of willow trees, the Salicylic Acid we carry is a high-purity, USP Grade white crystalline powder. Because it is a "USP" product, it meets the strict quality and purity standards set by the United States Pharmacopeia.

This versatile ingredient is most famous for its role in skincare, but it is also a vital building block in the manufacturing of various medicines and laboratory chemicals. In its pure form, it appears as fine white needles or a fluffy powder that is "freely soluble" in alcohol and ether, making it easy to incorporate into your favorite DIY formulas.

How is Salicylic Acid Made?

While Salicylic Acid has been used for centuries (dating back to ancient civilizations using willow bark for pain relief), modern production is much more sophisticated. It is typically produced through a process called the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, which involves heating sodium phenoxide with carbon dioxide under high pressure. This results in a stable, consistent, and highly pure substance that is far more concentrated than what you would find in nature.

Our current batch tests at an impressive 99.86% purity, ensuring you get exactly what you need for your projects without unnecessary fillers or heavy impurities.

Benefits & Uses of Salicylic Acid

Salicylic Acid is a powerhouse ingredient with a variety of applications:

  • Skincare & Cosmetics
Salicylic Acid is the "gold standard" for treating oily and acne-prone skin. As a BHA, it is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores to dissolve the "glue" that holds dead skin cells together. This makes it incredible for clearing clogged pores, reducing blackheads, and smoothing out skin texture. You'll find it in everything from face washes and toners to high-end chemical peels and anti-aging serums.
  • Hair Care
Beyond the face, Salicylic Acid is a common addition to specialty shampoos. It helps to exfoliate the scalp, removing flaky skin and buildup associated with dandruff or psoriasis, leaving the scalp feeling refreshed and clean.
  • Wart & Callus Removal
In higher concentrations, Salicylic Acid acts as a keratolytic, meaning it helps thin the skin in specific areas. This is why it is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter treatments for warts, corns, and tough calluses on the feet.
  • Laboratory & Manufacturing
For the more technically minded, Salicylic Acid is a key precursor in the production of Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). It is also used in laboratories as a chemical reagent for various tests and as a preservative in certain industrial applications.

Dosage, Safety & Storage

Because our Salicylic Acid is a 100% pure technical substance, it must be handled with care. It is classified as "Harmful if swallowed" and can cause "serious eye damage" if the powder comes into contact with your eyes. Always wear protective eyewear and gloves when handling the raw powder, and ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing in any dust.

For storage, Salicylic Acid is light-sensitive and should be kept in a cool, dry place in a tightly closed container. When stored correctly, it has a long shelf life.
